Wildlife...
An essential experience of the Point Reyes backcountry is observing wildlife. Quiet observation from a cautious distance allows you to enjoy the wilderness and for the animal to continue to feel safe in their home. To ensure your interaction with wildlife is safe not sorry, follow these tips:
Do not approach animals or attempt to feed them.
Observe all posted "Area Closed" signs during seasonal nesting and breeding. Pelican Point on Tomales Bay is closed year round. South Blue Gum Beach is closed during the harbor seal pupping season of March 1-June 30 each year.
Do not leave food out in your campsite or along trails. Human food is junk food to wildlife and causes illness. Animals that become adapted to human food sources can become dangerous and have to be destroyed or relocated.
Detour around large animals such as elk and nesting shorebirds especially during mating season or when young are present.
By following these rules, you can respect the needs of park wildlife as you visit their home.
